Why a Ranked List Won’t Help You
“Top 10 bridge manufacturers” lists rank on company size, website quality or paid placement. None of those tells you whether a supplier can weld a box girder for your span to the standard your road authority will accept.
A comparison framework works better because it is portable. You can send the same questions to every shortlisted supplier, line up the answers in one table and see where the evidence is thin.
10 Cosas a Comparar Entre Fabricantes de Puentes de Acero Prefabricados
1. What is fabricated in-house, and what is subcontracted
Ask for a list of production processes performed on the supplier’s own premises. Cutting, welding, blasting, coating, assembly and inspection are the core steps for a steel bridge. If two or more are subcontracted, quality control is split across companies you have never vetted.
What to request: a process list and factory floor layout or video walk-through.
2. Whether engineering and detailing are done by the same company
Some suppliers fabricate to drawings someone else produces. Others design, detail and fabricate. Neither is wrong, but you need to know who carries responsibility for the design calculations, and which detailing software produces the shop drawings your engineer will review.
What to request: names of design and detailing tools, a sample calculation report format, and who signs it.
3. Welding procedure qualification records (WPQR) for your joint types
A WPQR shows a welding procedure was tested and passed for a defined range of materials, thicknesses, joint types and welding processes. The word “range” is the point.
Common misconception: “They have WPQRs” means the welding is qualified. A procedure qualified for fillet welds on thin building members does not automatically cover thick-plate full-penetration butt welds in a bridge girder. Ask which WPQRs apply to the joints in your design, and have your engineer check the qualified range against the drawings.
4. Welder qualifications, separately from procedures
WPQRs qualify the procedure. Welder qualification certificates qualify the people. Ask for both, and ask whether the welders named will be the ones assigned to your order.
5. Third-party inspection: who, at which stage, and who pays
Find out which independent inspection bodies the supplier already works with, and at which hold points inspectors can attend: material receipt, fit-up, welding, coating, final dimensional check, packing.
Red flag: a supplier that accepts “third-party inspection” in principle but cannot name an organisation or a hold point.
6. What each certificate actually covers
Every management-system or product certificate carries a scope statement. Read it. A certificate may cover building structures and say nothing about bridges, or cover one factory site but not another. Match the scope to the product you are buying.
7. Surface preparation and coating capability
Bridges spend decades exposed to weather and, often, de-icing salts or coastal air. Ask how steel is prepared before coating (blasting standard and profile), what coating systems are available, and whether dry film thickness readings are recorded per member and handed over.

8. Trial assembly or shop fit-up
For modular bridges, connections that do not line up on site cost far more than they would to fix in the factory. Ask whether the supplier trial-assembles segments, fully or partially, before shipping, and whether dimensional reports are issued.
9. Price basis and minimum order
Ask for prices on the same basis from every supplier, usually per m² of deck, and for a written scope of what that price includes. Ask for the minimum order quantity up front; a single short footbridge can fall below many manufacturers’ thresholds.
10. Handover document package
Agree the document list before ordering, not after delivery: calculation report, as-built drawings, material certificates, WPQRs, inspection and test records, coating records, erection method statement. A supplier reluctant to commit the list in the contract is telling you something.
Manufacturer, Trading Company or Local Fabricator?
Not every company that lists a steel bridge for sale makes one. The supplier type changes what evidence you can realistically get.

Compared with a trading company, a fabricating manufacturer can answer items 1 to 8 on the list above from its own records instead of relaying questions to a factory you cannot see. The local fabricator’s advantage is approval familiarity and transport distance, which can outweigh other factors on small or urgent projects.

On item 6, ISO describes ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 as its standards for quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management systems. These certify how a company manages its processes; they do not certify a specific bridge design. Note also that KXD’s AISC certification is listed as a building fabricator certification. If your authority requires a bridge-specific fabricator qualification, raise it before shortlisting.
What This Checklist Cannot Tell You
Paper evidence has limits, and it is worth being honest about them before you rely on it.
- Documents show capability, not performance on your bridge. A supplier can hold every record above and still deliver a poorly fitted segment. Third-party inspection at fabrication hold points is what closes that gap.
- Bridge project references matter, and are not always available. KXD’s published project portfolio is made up of building projects (factories, logistics and retail facilities). It does not currently publish bridge case studies, so ask any shortlisted supplier, KXD included, for bridge-specific references and contactable clients.
- Certificates expire. Check issue and expiry dates, and verify through the issuing body where a lookup service exists.
- Local approval sits outside the supplier comparison. Even the strongest overseas fabricator’s design usually needs review or adoption by a locally recognised engineer.
Turning the Checklist into a Supplier Request
- Copy the 10 criteria into a single request letter.
- Attach your crossing data: span, vehicle or pedestrian loading, design code, deck width, abutment status.
- Ask each supplier to answer every item in writing, marking “not available” where it applies.
- Score the answers in one table, giving more weight to items 3, 5 and 6 if your authority audits fabrication.
- Shortlist two or three suppliers for a technical call with your engineer before requesting prices.
Requesting prices last feels backwards, but price only becomes comparable once scope and evidence line up.
Preguntas frecuentes
Q: Should I choose the manufacturer with the most certificates?
A: Not on count alone. One certificate whose scope covers bridge fabrication is worth more than several that cover only buildings or management processes.
Q: Can I visit KXD’s factory before ordering?
A: Ask KXD directly when you enquire. If a visit isn’t practical, an inspection by an independent body at agreed hold points gives comparable assurance.
Q: Does KXD publish bridge case studies?
A: Not currently. Its published project portfolio covers building projects. Ask for bridge references during the technical discussion.
Q: Is a WPQR the same as a welding certificate?
A: No. A WPQR qualifies a welding procedure within a defined range. Individual welders hold separate qualification certificates.
Q: Is KXD’s published price comparable with other manufacturers’ quotes?
A: Only after you align the basis. KXD publishes USD 40–100/m² for its prefabricated steel bridge line, depending on specifications; confirm the measurement basis and what the figure includes before comparing.
